"Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong" - Murphy's law

Why hire a prison consultant?

Being charged with a criminal offense can be a life upending event, particularly given that the vast majority of individuals charged criminally in the United States federal court system do not go to trial. About nine-in-ten of defendants charged plead guilty, as acquittals and dismissals are few and far between in the federal system.

Many also end up serving sentences involving some period of incarceration or home confinement as more stringent Federal Sentencing Guidelines do not favor probationary sentences.

As such, much of the federal defense practice is centered on limiting exposure to harsher penalties and sentences, but when the sentence is imposed and the word "incarceration" is heard in open court, few legal professionals actually know what happens next and how best to prepare these individuals for the journey that lies ahead.

Here at Patronus Prison Consulting, we believe that the best advice and information comes from those that have traveled that path before. Having walked the walked, and talked the talk both as a former prosecutor and a criminal defendant, Adam's background and experience provides clients with a uniquely personal perspective and point of reference.

And, while legal representation is a must for anyone charged in either Federal or State court, adding Patronus Prison Consulting to your team offers the client, their families, and defense attorneys a resource that provides direction, reassurance, and practical information. Patronus Prison Consulting seeks to make that life upending event one that is more easily navigable from indictment to final release.

What we do for you

At Patronus Prison Consulting, we are best suited to assist individuals by:

  • Preparing them for any period of incarceration should the worst-case scenario happen;

  • Navigating the administrative, technical and logistical minefields and hurdles omnipresent at federal correctional institutions and satellite camps often involving concerns about:
  • the Bureau of Prisons correct application of the First Step Act (FSA) time credits,
  • projected conditional release dates,
  • the relevance of the Second Chance Act (SCA) to maximizing pre-release custody placements, residential reentry time, and home confinement eligibility, AND
  • the disciplinary process involving the issuance of incident reports that can lead to possible sanctions and diminution of good time credits, loss of FSA time credits, restrictive privileges (i.e. visitation, telephone, commissary, and electronic messaging through the TRULINCS system), and worse yet disciplinary segregation in special housing units;

  • Educating them on the relevant and applicable Bureau of Prisons drug abuse treatment programs (i.e. Residential Drug Abuse Program "RDAP") that may reduce their in-custody time if deemed to be eligible; AND

  • Assisting with any issues that may arise during their transition to residential reentry centers, aptly dubbed halfway houses, before being transferred to supervised release.

What we do for your loved ones

The challenges that loved ones on the outside encounter represent the hidden toll of incarceration, as their struggles are too often overlooked and discounted. Despite what the Federal and State correctional systems preach about the importance of maintaining family contact in prioritizing recidivism reduction goals, the realities of what actually is practiced often leaves many loved ones feeling frustrated and isolated.

Whether it is dealing with the correctional institution suspending visitation; the stringent visitation protocols; the electronic mail glitches and delays; associated financial cost of electronic communication and technological issues plaguing the TRULINCS email system; the limited number of allocated telephone minutes; the inability to conduct video calls; or apathetic interactions with correctional staff; all of these contribute to making it even harder for loved ones to maintain ties with those incarcerated.

Patronus Prison Consulting recognizes these hardships that loved ones endure during this stress filled time period and we work directly with loved ones to provide guidance in minimizing and lessening those obstacles.
